Quotes from Katie
2004 US Olympic Swimming Trials
“I didn't expect to win, just to make the team. (I was) trying to give her (Amanda Beard) a good race. It could have gone either way."
From 2004 SC World Champs:
[On her 400m individual medley heat] "I finished the race strong and that was my goal. I’ve never done that at an international meet before.”
[On the pool] “It was weird and had a lot of turns. I’ve never swum a short course before. But, it was pretty fast and I liked it.”
[On swimming against a strong field] “It’s toughened me mentally, trying to stay with my own race and do the best that I can.”
[On her race] “I felt a little tired toward the end. It's kind of tough to come in here after taking a little time off after the Olympics, so I’m really happy with my finish.”
From 2005 World Championship Trials:
[On winning the 200 Free] "I was very shocked to get first place tonight. I came into this meet just wanting to make finals and make a relay, but I surprised myself. I focus on myself and not others and all I try to do is improve at each meet. I take one meet at a time. I'm not focusing on Beijing at this time. It's more short-term goals."
[On her 200 Back at Trials] "My goal was to end up at 2:15 flat and I did that."
"I have really tried to improve my backstroke and my breaststroke, and it paid off."
"Coming into this meet [World Champ Trials], my goal was to do my best time, and in the back of my mind, I was hoping to win and even get the American record."
2005 World Championships
"I wasn’t even thinking about winning or breaking the record, because those things really get me nervous. For this event I was just trying to remain confident, because I have been a little bit shaky. I was just aiming to get a best time so I am really excited with that.
[About the meet in general] This meet has been incredible for everyone, a World Record here and there, we have exceeded our expectations.”
[After winning gold in 200IM at 2005 Worlds] "This feels amazing. I felt like this was my most pressured event, so just to get it done with and do so great, it’s just so exciting. I was relaxed and have done the training to back it up so whatever happens, happens – this is a time to have fun. I have trained really hard, and that is not so fun and for me, it’s all about having fun. I told myself there was no way to let this training to go waste, it is my time, I am ready to go! My whole race was flashing through my mind (during the medal ceremonies) and I thought: I did it, I can’t believe it, and I couldn’t believe the national anthem was playing for me."
[On her 200 Free prelim at 2005 Worlds] "I can’t complain. It was pretty tough because of all the excitement of last night but I got psyched up for this 200m, and wanted to do my best because I was not ranked so well. I am really happy with that. I am just going to go with my momentum I am in right now and carry through the meet."
[On the US 800 Free Relay win at 2005 Worlds] "We weren’t nervous. That’s how we swam in the Olympic Games. I knew Natalie (Coughlin) swam really well. I wasn’t too nervous, I just put blinders on and went. It worked out for me.’’
Quotes about Katie
"It'll be fun to play off each other. She's awesome. I haven't had much time to talk to her. So far, I think she's a great girl." - Amanda Beard @ US Olympic Trials
“She went out controlled and looked great. She just didn’t have it at the end. She’s 15. She's only swam long course 400 IM probably less than 20 times." - Katie's coach, Paul Yetter, on her 400IM at the Olympics
"At her young age, she is just swimming, just enjoying the sport. But she's going to be a force down the road. It has been great watching her here. Right now, she's better than she was last August." - Jack Bauerle, coach of the American women's world championships team
"Katie Hoff is a wunderkind." - Rowdy Gaines
"We need a Michael Phelps on the women's side, and she has the potential to be that superstar. She comes from a great gene pool. She's not afraid to work hard. And she's only 15. She reminds me of Tracy Caulkins -- who, in my opinion, is the greatest all-around swimmer in history. She has that much talent." - Rowdy Gaines
"She's young. She's talented. She's full of energy." - Katilin Sandeno
"She's gifted at many strokes, not just one." - Katilin Sandeno
"I had a swimming technique shoot with Katie and her coach at the World Trials and she is a wonderful person to interact with and a very hard worker. I wish only the best for her. She has a bright future, in and out of the pool." - Photographer Peter Bick
"Katie reminds me of myself when I started, she is so adorable. The girls I started out with are not here, so I am with a new crowd of girls and Katie is in there. She reminds me of me when I was her age, all the boys picking on her and just loving it.’’ - Kaitlin Sandeno
